Blinds add elegance to any decor

Considering your window coverings when designing your room is as important as choosing the right piece of furniture.  The wrong curtains and blinds can change the entire feeling of a room, so while you may have the perfect sofa in mind, do you know which blinds or curtains you intend to buy?

It’s always such an exciting time when you decide to refurnish or decorate a room, so it is important to stand back and carefully study the room.  Think about what you are going to do, the furniture you are going to add and where your window is positioned in the room before choosing its covering.

So many varieties

The great thing is that blinds work in any room from the kitchen to the sitting room and with so many varieties, colours and designs to choose from, you will not be short on choice when decorating your home.

For the bedroom, there are vertical blinds and roller blinds.  Both work so well, give a clean and crisp look and in the right colours will complement the space with ease.  When it comes to kitchens and bathrooms, plastic venetian blinds are always a good choice, they are easy to clean and maintain, and just require a damp cloth to wipe away unwanted dust.

Super patterns and colours

When it comes to living rooms, this is when you have a big choice on your hands.  If your home is traditional, roman blinds may be ideal, made from quality materials and available in some super patterns and colours.  Alternatively, you may choose vertical blinds, which are easy to open and close, adding the splash of colour the room deserves.

When it comes to adding blinds to any room, thanks to their clean look, they offer a style and elegance that curtains rarely achieve.  They are so easy to maintain and install, making them firm favourites for homes all over the world.

Essential DIY safety equipment

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips

Everyone will have heard an amusing story from a friend about a family member who has been injured doing DIY in the home. Unfortunately, injury during DIY can be a serious matter, and there are several pieces of safety equipment that every DIYer should have in their home.

Goggles

It is all too easy to underestimate the importance of goggles. When doing any form of DIY it is possible to damage your eyes and you should take extreme care to protect them. Goggles that wrap around your head, which have side protection, are highly recommended. Once you have bought these, do not fail to put them on for any hazardous activities.

Dust mask

When cutting blocks with power tools, or just a regular saw, all manner of dust can be produced. As you can imagine, breathing in this material does not do your lungs any favours. A dust mask will remove the vast majority of hazardous materials, including dust, from cutting wood and stone.

Gloves and overalls

DIY is all about working with your hands, and if you injure them your project can be set back by months. Do not think that one pair of gloves is suitable for all tasks; you should buy a pair that are suited to the type of DIY you are doing. For handling glass, thick knitted gloves are perfect. When using machinery, switch to leather gloves, and if you have to handle chemicals then rubber gloves are the ones to go for.

Finally, don’t overlook a pair of overalls. They don’t just protect your clothes from damage but they can stop pieces of clothing getting caught in a power tool and causing you serious injury.

These are just some of the most important safety items, although there are others that you might need, such as ear protectors or safety boots, depending on what project you are doing.

Soft Blinds

Soft Blinds is the name given to blinds such as Roman, Austrian and Festoon blinds because they are made from a flexible fabric. Soft blinds are stylish and look good in most rooms.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds consist of fabric panels that have a plastic rod inserted into the back of them. When the blind is up the fabric is retracted into panels which sit in front of each other. When the blind is down the panels lay down flat. Roman blinds can be black out and lined, and they are available in a number of colours, meaning they fit well in most rooms. Roman blinds have a cord with a cord lock or a continuous chain for operating them. Alternatively they can be attached to a motor for operation.

Festoon Blinds

The material of a festoon blind is gathered in both the width and the drop, creating gathers of swags when the blind is both up and down.

Austrian Blinds

Unlike in a festoon blind, an Austrian blind has a full width, but swags at the lower end of the material. Both festoon and Austrian blinds come in a range of fabrics and materials to match the room in which they are being hung.

DIY Tips – Grouting Tiles

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips, Tiles

There are a number of different steps involved in renovating a bathroom, one of which can be replacing the tiles.  Undertaking the work without needing the services of a professional can offer a great sense of satisfaction and the knowledge that the result will be exactly as desired.

Grout Type

Select the correct type of grout in accordance with the tiles being laid.  For example, a heavy-duty sanded grout will be more beneficial for floor tiles than for porcelain tiles.  Similarly, the colour of the grout can add to the style of the finished product.

Mix Grout

Mix only as much grout is required at any one time because there is a limited time in which it can be used before it dries out and becomes useless.  Follow the instructions for this process and commence using the grout immediately afterwards, making sure the pot is covered if it needs to be left.

Application

Once the grout has been mixed, a grout float can be used to apply it to the tiled surface.  The position of the tiles can be retained with the use of cross-shaped brackets between them, which can be hidden by the grout.  Spread the grout over the joints between the tiles, repeating the process where necessary to ensure that no gaps remain.  Follow this by drawing a scraper firmly over the tiled surface to remove the excess.  Keep a damp sponge to hand to remove any last traces of grout before leaving the compound to dry for at least 24 hours undisturbed.

Planning the decking in your garden

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips, Garden, Home Improvements

An area of well-planned, well-built and well-maintained decking can make a big difference to the garden and the experience of using it. Decking can help bring the garden inside the home, serving as a transitional zone, an easy portal between inside and out. Get decking right and it will last for years and enhance the home. Get it wrong and the result is wasted time and money, an eyesore, and an awkwardly sited pile of rotting timber.

The planning phase is crucial in this project. Consider access to the decking. Will the decking extend from patio doors or will it be an island? How big will it be? Mark out the area on the ground to help imagine the decking in context. Imagine having drinks with friends or enjoying the garden with the family.

Is the site sufficiently private, or will extra screening, like tall plants, be needed? Are there any services – drains or manholes – extant requiring a hatch in the deck? Finally, is the garden level enough or is landscaping needed?

Planning permission might be needed – check with your local authority by showing them a sketch – before embarking on the build. With that out of the way, get down to detail by considering the weight of the things and people intended to use the decking and whether or not balustrades are required.

With the area fully planned, top quality materials can now be sourced and the fun part can finally begin – the build.

Benefits of Window Blinds

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips, Home Improvements, Interior Design

When it’s time to redecorate your home, it is important to give your windows the same preferential treatment you give your floors and walls. To make your windows look smart and glamorous, install brand-new blinds instead of curtains.  After all, blinds are considered to be better than curtains in a lot of ways.

One of the biggest benefits of window blinds is that they are more affordable and last longer compared to curtains.  This is because curtain fads and trends change, whereas blinds have an aesthetic value that remains evergreen.  In addition, with blinds, there are always different styles and colours to pick from.  The value of blinds comes through in the fact that they have to be cleaned once in several years to make them sparkle, unlike curtains that need to be washed every month.

Another key benefit of blinds is the insulating factor.  If you’re trying to create comfortable live-in temperatures, blinds could be the best way of going about it.  Blinds act as an insulator, allowing rooms to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

All in all, when it comes to windows, more homeowners are choosing blinds for their functionality, price and appearance.

Adjusting a poorly flushing toilet

Author: dpinning  //  Category: Bathrooms, DIY Tips, Toilets

Adjusting a poorly flushing toilet is one of the simplest plumbing jobs for the home DIY enthusiast and is a good place to start if you are new to the game. Making something work properly in the home can do wonders for self-confidence, as well as gaining you kudos from family members.

First of all, check that the water level in the cistern is correct. Lift the cistern cover away to inspect it and see whether it corresponds with the waterline mark. This clear line is usually marked on the cistern unit, but if not, you will find it on the overflow tube.

You can change the water level by adjusting the float arm by means of its sliding device and locking bolt. Try adjusting this just a little at first, and if that does not have any effect you will need to replace the flush valve.

In cases where there is no sliding mechanism, adjust the screw on the intake valve to increase or decrease the level of water. There is a nut on the screw that can be tightened up when you are happy with the new water level.

The benefits of laminate flooring

Laminate flooring has increased in popularity in recent years. Householders have learned of the benefits this modern flooring offers, with features such as a warm underfoot feeling, easy cleaning, maintenance and simple installation. Allergies aggravated by dust are better managed in an environment without carpets, and laminate flooring is a good alternative.

Another reason for choosing laminate flooring is the price. Compared to other options, laminate flooring offers the best choice in style and finish, and also boasts impressive durability.

On the surface, laminate flooring looks similar to traditional wooden flooring. Surprisingly, laminate flooring contains no wood at all, just a thin film of décor paper tightly sealed under a hardened, protective, clear finish. The décor paper is simply a photographic image of a specific type of wood grain adhered to a solid back.

Installation is straightforward. Depending on the product, flooring can be glued to a subfloor or laid on an underlay to keep it off the surface below. Systems are available that click together easily. This method is often the quickest and cleanest option.

The wide choice of colours, effects and finishes means there is laminate flooring suitable for most interiors.

Motorised Blinds

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips, Home Improvements, Interior Design

Blinds are available in a huge range of styles, fabrics and colours. Whatever the style of your room, you are sure to be able to find a blind style that will suit it, from Roman to Venetian to roller blinds and even black-out.

Most blinds are operated with a chord, chain or spring-mechanism. However, it is also possible to motorise nearly all types of blinds, meaning that they can be operated simply with the push of a button. A reason that many people prefer to motorise their blinds is that it is more practical with larger blinds, and those that are opened and closed on a regular basis. Motorised blinds are undoubtedly more convenient to use. Additionally, the risk of accidently breaking them is reduced because there are no cords or chains to pull.

Usually a 24V DC motor will be used in motorised blinds. However, if the blind is significantly larger and heavier, then a more powerful motor may need to be used. The motor can either be plugged into the mains or powered by a long-life battery. What is more, if there a number of blinds in one room, it is possible to operate them all from the same control point.

Blinds that are fitted to a motor are usually operated using a handset, where the user simply pushes a button to open, close and adjust the blinds. Blinds can also be put on a timer, and linked to lights and security and other home automation systems.

Removing a radiator

Author: dpinning  //  Category: DIY Tips, Radiators

If a radiator needs to be disconnected, for any reason, you can do the job yourself with a little know-how and save an unnecessary bill from the plumber. If you are replacing the radiator with a new one, it will need to be the same size. There is no need to drain your entire heating system in order to do this; you can usually isolate the radiator and disconnect it without much trouble.

This job can be messy, so you will need to have several bowls and old towels on hand and make sure your carpet and flooring is protected. Have the right tools handy before you start – an adjustable spanner and pliers or mole grips, plus a radiator key, will be needed. You should also check where your main stopcock is in case you have an emergency and have to cut off the water supply.

Firstly, stop the flow of water to the radiator from both sides by turning the control valve to ‘off’ and the valve on the other side (the lockshield valve) to a closed position. You will need the pliers or mole grips to do this. Next, you need to drain the water out of the radiator, and this is where it gets messy. You may need a colleague to help.

Holding a bowl underneath, carefully loosen the horizontal nut between the control valve and the radiator. Water will then flow out, and if you use the radiator key to open the bleeding vent it will come out faster. Then you can do the same to the nut on the other end of the radiator, and when it is empty it is ready to lift off the wall. To reinstall the same radiator it is best to clean up the valves and screw threads first. Then you just go through the same steps, but in reverse.
