If the weather is particularly cold and a tap stops working in your house, then it might be that a pipe has become frozen and is blocking the flow of water. If you want to alleviate this problem you need to locate the frozen pipe, which is easier than it might seem.
First off, you should find out if there are any other taps in the house that are not working. This will help you work out where in your network of pipes the blockage is. Once you know which pipe is blocked, get a hair-drier and start warming the pipe. Start close to the tap and work your way back to the source of the water. You must leave the blocked tap open, so you know when the blockage is clear when the water starts flowing again.
As with many repairs, the best solution is prevention, so insulate this point in the pipe so that it does not become frozen again. If possible, you should make the effort to insulate all the pipes in your home.
