The joys of DIY

There are always plenty of jobs that need doing around the house. Many people derive huge pleasure from tackling big projects, such as fitting a bathroom or fitting a kitchen, but there also are many smaller and simpler ways of brightening up your home.

Painting the walls a more harmonious colour can do wonders for your house. Bedrooms benefit from warmer and softer colours, but living rooms can often do with something brighter and more energetic.

With so many types and colours of paints to choose from, the main headache with painting is usually deciding which colour scheme to opt for. Consult a few magazines before starting. Bolder colours can be a bit of a gamble, either working wonderfully, or ending in something of a disaster. However, some suppliers offer a virtual experience to see what the room would actually look like when finished.

Even simple things like changing lampshades, adding embroidery to old cushions and rearranging the furniture can do wonders.

For the bigger jobs you will need a complete set of power tools, and to have a pretty good idea of what is involved before you start. Fitting a bathroom or fitting a kitchen may probably be best left to the professionals, but if you’re happy to tackle this sort of project, it can be a rewarding learning curve, as well as saving huge amounts of money. The basic items may be obtained quite cheaply; and if you are prepared to be patient and methodical, there is no reason why you cannot succeed at what may seem to be pretty daunting DIY projects.
